Things to do in London in September 2019… if you like comics, of course. Exhibitions followed by events… let us know if we missed any.

Exhibitions:

In Focus – Jessica Martin Life Drawing: Life Under Lights, Jessica has recently published her graphic memoir Life Drawing: Life Under Lights that takes you on a journey from her early life though her career and how she ended up making her way in the world of Graphic Novels. The display is made up of her original drawings from Life Under Lights as well as ephemera from thought out her life. Cartoon Museum, until October 13th.

Robert Paul and the Beginnings of Cinema in Londonwith free graphic novel, London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, until 10th October.

Comic Creators, the Famous and the Forgotten, London Cartoon Museum, Wells St – A new exhibition celebrating the world of comics, curated by Comics Curator Steve Marchant. Grateful thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, until September 30th.

The Cartoon Museum – Drawing Life. A new display showcasing the very best of the Cartoon Museums collection of cartoon art, curated by Cartoonist and Cartoon Museum Trustee Steve Bell. Until December 31st.

Things To Do In London If You Like Comics in August 2019
Doaly – Pop Culture Poster Art Exhibition –UK-based digital illustrator Doaly with a choice selection of his comic book themed posters on display and a range of smaller A4-sized prints available to purchase in-store, Orbital Comics, 14th August – 8th September.

Posy Simmonds: A Retrospective.The first major UK retrospective of the celebrated comic artist and graphic novelist. Posy Simmonds' sharp satire and progressive female characters have defined a career spanning 50 years. The exhibition will feature her early-career pastiches, iconic cartoon strips for The Guardian and children's books such as Fred, which became an Oscar-nominated film. It will also include the first ever British graphic novel, True Love, unseen pages from Tamara Drewe and drawings from Simmonds' new 2018 book, Cassandra Darke. House Of Illustration, 24th of May to 30th September.

The Day Of Dredd – 2-6pm, Orbital Comics

In collaboration with Rebellion (publishers of 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine), Orbital Comics will be hosting a very special "Day of Dredd" Art Jam, where invited comic creators will collaborate together on a huge Judge Dredd themed mural on the walls of the Orbital Gallery. Running from 2-6pm on Saturday 7th September, the Day of Dredd Art Jam will feature a wealth of guest artists from across the comic book industry and the indie comics scene. Some already confirmed guests include Conor Boyle and Laurence Campbell, with more to be announced soon.

Graphic Narratives and Social Impact – Symposium, London College of Communication

When examining the purpose or function of such graphic narratives (sometimes called Applied Comics) the following categories can, and have been used; educational, informational, instructional, journalistic and public relations. Through workshops and academic papers, this symposium examines the impact of graphic narratives on a range of different social issues such as education, healthcare and politics. 11am-12.30pm: Workshop 1 This workshop will examine, discuss and evaluate a selection of comics and cartoons from Sian Cook's archive of graphic communication material related to HIV/AIDS. 1-2.30pm: Academic Panel. Three presentations by Dr Nina Mickwitz, Dr Pen Mendonca and Tobias Yu-Kiener will examine different aspects of the social impact of graphic narratives followed by a open discussion of the issues raised. 2.30-4pm: Workshop 2 This workshop will examine, discuss and evaluate a selection of educational, instructional and public relations comic books from UAL Archives and Special Collections. Please note that both workshops use materials containing adult content.

Emerge Festival: Make your own 3D Cartoon Character, Wilfrid Wood is a satirical sculpting prodigy. His style harks back to trademark British animators of the 80s and 90s as well as huge artists like Jeff Koons and David Shrigley. Emerge is your chance to pull up your sleeves under Wilfrid's instruction and go wild. Misshapen plasticine faces and cartoonish bodies with nuts expressions are totally fair game. The Cartoon Museum, Wells St, 7-11pm.

African Superheroes Day, We Are 336 336 Brixton Road, 6.30-9.30pm

Many artists are making up for the severe lack of positive images of black people in animated films and comics, there's alot more than just Black Panther. This animation festival for 6-60 year olds, will feature a variety of African-themed cartoons and authentic black history which tell tales of; Magical Nigerian women warriors, Anansi the West African Folk Hero, The story of Ogun and Oshun, Teenage black superheroes and more
