Voice Actors Set Strike Date Against Video Game Industry
This morning, the SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors have voted unanimously on a strike date against major video game employers, and if negotiations are unsuccessful, will go on strike Friday, October 21 at 12:01 a.m. The strike will affect all video games that went into production after February 17th, 2015 and will affect a large number of video game companies including Activision, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts, Insomniac Games, Take 2 Interactive, VoiceWorks and WB Games.
The dispute centers around the treatment and compensation for voice actors and the video game industry's use of non-union member for union jobs and union members for non-union jobs. They are also pushing to have recording sessions limited to 2-hours to prevent vocal damage. The union is also pushing to end some of the secrecy that industry demands including not letting the actors know what game they would be working on before accepting the role.
The main problem seems to stem from the inherent differences between the entertainment industry and the software development industry.
