How many people are adapting Frankenstein right now? Quite a few, apparently, and if you're losing count, we don't blame you. There are twists on the genre, like Searchlight's Poor Things, which is in theaters now, and Lisa Frankenstein from Focus Features next month. Guillermo del Toro is working on an adaptation for Netflix, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is also adapting the film for Warner Bros. Gyllenhaal is better known for her acting roles; however, she branched into directing back in 2021 with The Lost Daughter. The film was well-received and was nominated for three Academy Awards, two Golden Globe nominations, and many others. The cast for her film adaptation is already stacked and includes some major names. Deadline is reporting that Annette Bening is the latest to join the cast, which includes Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard, with Emma Tillinger, Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren producing and Courtney Kivowitz and Carla Raij executive producing.

Buckley is set to be the film's star, and Deadline has the logline for the film: "A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman, and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement." So this is a period piece to an extent and also appears to be leaning more toward the Bride of Frankenstein than just the original book. That is something that could help set it apart from del Toro's adaptation, but then again, we don't know much about his adaptation either. Sources also say that the film will be heading into production soon, so this is much further along than one might think. Gyllenhaal showed real promise as a director in The Lost Daughter, so seeing her return to it is fantastic.
