Five Nights At Freddy's Director on the Film's Official Rating
The director of the upcoming film Five Nights At Freddy's recently explained that the film is accessible to all audiences.
For some reason, PG-13 horror is always a topic of conversation with some of the genre's more aggressive audience, even though solid films like The Grudge, The Last Exorcism, Insidious, and more recently, M3GAN have already delivered solid scares for audiences of all ages (mostly). So, with the upcoming film Five Nights At Freddy's proving to have a mostly younger-skewing audience, it only makes sense that it'll be a gruesome film that's still aware of its teen demographic.

When speaking to Inverse, the movie's co-writer and director Emma Tammi discussed the film's PG-13 rating, telling the publication, "We were trying to push it as far as we could while still retaining that PG-13 rating. That meant the kills needed to be executed in a certain way. And while it is so fun in many slasher films to see all the guts and the gore, it is also really fun to figure out creative ways to show these moments without showing all the details. In some cases, we leaned into shadows and silhouettes and sound design to really feel the moment in an impactful way without showing any gore. So that is something that I had a lot of fun doing, and actually really appreciated that we were taking the PG-13 approach for this because there's such a younger audience for Five Nights At Freddy's, and we didn't want to exclude them."
The official film synopsis: "The film follows Mike (Josh Hutcherson; Ultraman, The Hunger Games franchise), a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio; Holly & Ivy, Unstable), and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before. Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant, Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy's is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa, a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail; You, Mack & Rita), Mike's nights at Freddy's will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare."
Five Nights at Freddy's drops on Peacock on October 26, with the theatrical release the following day on October 27, 2023.
