"Micronauts" Rolls Snake Eyes, Gets Bumped to 2021

Micronauts, the movie that is being made for me, and me only, has been bumped back to June of 2021 by Paramount Pictures.

The good news? A June release date is a pretty bold decision for a movie studio to make for an untried property, especially one that hasn't been terribly relevant for at least 40 years.

The bad news? I'll probably be too old in 2021 to remember why I loved Micronauts so damned much when I was a kid. Still, I'll take my Acroyear fix any way I can get it.

Micronauts has been pushed back by the next G.I. Joe movie, which was moved from its original March 2020 date to October 16th, 2020, where Micronauts had been quietly minding its own business.

Know Micronauts, Know Transformers. No Micronauts, No Transformers.

Prior to "westernization" by Mego in the late '70s, Micronauts were a wildly popular Japanese toy line called Microman, and made by Takara. The action figures were the very first 3 and 3/4 inch action figures in the world, inspired by a need to use less plastic for toys during the global energy crisis.

That fact shouldn't be lost on anyone who collected toys in the '70s and '80s. That smaller scale was adopted by Kenner for their  Star Wars figures, and the entire design concept of Microman was copied by Hasbro for their re-booted G.I. Joe line in the early '80s.

Microman was also highly articulated, and parts from different figures could be swapped together to make new creations. It also lead the way to Robotman, a giant toy robot that could fit a Microman figure in its chest plate.

Robotman was made into a smaller version for the Diaclone spin-off of vehicles for Microman, which was made up of 1.25" Microman figures and their vehicles. The difference with the Diaclone Robotman, though, was that he could transform from robot to car form, essentially becoming the first transforming toy on the market.

Eventually, Microman was brought to the U.S. by Mego as the beginning of its Micronauts line, and the toys were a huge hit. The brand lasted well into the early '80s, spawning a successful Marvel comics series and a ton of great toys.

Mego went bankrupt in the early 1982, but parts of the line lived on. Palisades Toys tried to revive the property in 2002, but had little success. SOTA tried in vain to bring Micronauts back from the dead in 2005, and failed miserably due to poor market condition.

Now, the Micronauts line rests comfortably with Hasbro, which plans to bring the toy line into a shared universe with G.I. Joe, Transformers, and M.A.S.K.
