Paul Bettany Talks His Solo: A Star Wars Story Villain
The movie is only a few weeks away but there is actually quite a bit about Solo: A Star Wars Story that we don't know. One of the main things we don't know much about is Paul Bettany's villain Dryden Vos. Bettany did an interview with Time where he shed a bit more light on the character and what it was like going into this movie so late in the game.
He's a gangster, a godfather figure. He's got a long reach, and he demands his tribute before any sort of business deal goes forward. And, of course, Han gets mixed up with him.
Bettany went on to talk about how this movie feels very different from other Star Wars movies because it focuses on people who are much more morally grey instead of the black and white versions of good and evil that come into latter movies.
It feels very different tonally from the other Star Wars movies. This is definitely a world where Han shoots first. And that's as it should be. It's absolutely what attracted me to Han when I was a little boy. Thinking, Oh my God, he's so bad. He's just out for himself. But then he can't help but show up at the Death Star when you need him. He's worked out that the galaxy is cruel and you need to be cruel to get by, but he can't quite do it because he has a heart.
Bettany was brought on during the reshoots after Ron Howard took over the production. The behind-the-scenes issues have been a common topic of conversation but Bettany seemed to enjoy the experience even if it was done very quickly.
It all happened very quickly. I got the call from Ron Howard, and I was on the set two weeks later. I was worried about it going in, but all my fears went away the moment I arrived. I got off the plane, and I was in the makeup chair 20 minutes after that. Ron was like a laser. It was virtuosic what he did in a very short amount of time and in very trying circumstances. It was lovely seeing an old friend be so brilliant.
It's going to be interesting to see how this movie turns out in the end. The pre-sale numbers are looking very good so maybe there is more of a demand for a Han Solo movie than fans originally thought. Or maybe everyone just wants to see more Lando.
Summary: During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton. It will be released May 25th.
