Steven Spielberg To Direct Tony Kushner-Scripted The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

The last time Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner worked together, they birthed Lincoln (and Munich before that), so I think this is very good news. Variety reports though it's not his next film, Spielberg has added historical drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara to his slate, which was adapted by Kushner from the David Kertzer novel.

The 19th Century set religiously-tinged true story follows:

an Italian Jew who in 1858 became the center of an international controversy when he was removed from his parents at the age of seven by authorities of the Papal States and raised as a Catholic. He went on to become a priest in the Augustinian order.

Kushner is in the early stages of adapting the novel. Meanwhile, Spielberg's next directing gig is down to two finalists: He'll either do sci-fi Robopaclypse, which he had come close to getting into production with Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway starring, or historical war epic Montezuma, though that one is still in the scripting stages. So mark Robopocalypse down as the frontrunner for now.
