House of Cards Season 6: Netflix Resumes Production on Final Season
After months of controversy, delays, and production shutdowns stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct against previous lead Kevin Spacey, Netflix has announced that production on the sixth and final season of House of Cards has resumed. In addition, the streaming service also announced that Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) would be joining series lead and executive producer Robin Wright in Season 6. Though specific information on their roles is being kept secret, it is known that the two will be playing siblings.
When the allegations against Spacey first went public, the series was in the middle of filming the second of what was originally supposed to be a 13-episode season. Netflix suspended production on October 31st, announcing that Season 6 would the final season for the series. Writers reworked the scripts to exclude Spacey's ex-President Frank Underwood, further emphasizing the streaming service's statement that it will "not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey". In the beginning of December, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos stated that production would begin in mid-January on an abbreviated with Wright as the lead.
Joining Wright, Lane and Kinnear on the final season of Netflix's award-winning original series are Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver. Created by Beau Willimon and based on the British miniseries, House of Cards is executive produced by Wright, Melissa James Gibson, Frank Pugliese, David Fincher, Joshua Donen, Dana Brunetti, Eric Roth, Michael Dobbs and Andrew Davies.
Nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2003's Unfaithful, Lane is also known for roles in films such as Streets of Fire, Under the Tuscan Sun and Chaplin. She currently plays the role of Martha Kent, human mother to Clark Kent-Superman in DC Comics' cinematic universe; and is appearing in Amazon's upcoming series The Romanoffs. Kinnear was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Jack Nicholson-starrer As Good As It Gets, and recently starred in the miniseries The Kennedys.
