Fear The Walking Dead Season 3 Premiere: Spoilers And A Catch-Up (Update)

The Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 Premiere is almost upon us [UPDATE — A few very spoilery early reactions below the image!], so it's time to do a little catch-up. According to executive producer Dave Erickson and the official synopsis, it's a season that is bound to be viewed through a political lens. The survivalist group which was encountered at the end of season 2 is known as the Militia, and includes their leader Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie) and his family Troy (Daniel Sharman) and Jake (Sam Underwood). We also know that Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades — and by the way, Blades has been a very serious — not to mention very knowledgeable — vintage comic book collector over the years).

Erickson calls the Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 "very much a border season", and also notes that "things about this season is that it is very much about appropriation of land and culture."

I think the fracture of the family served us last season. Now, what's intriguing to me is, having changed each of the characters individually, having put them to their role and their own separate journeys, when they're reunited, do they recognize each other anymore?

Danay García has also dropped a few tidbits about the upcoming season from the perspective of her character, Lucy.  "In Season 2, I was the local. The Americans were the foreigners. Now we switch roles. I have to follow somebody else's rules. It will be interesting. That's something that every immigrant goes through."

And finally, something we don't know too much about yet: Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) also has a role in Fear the Walking Dead Season 3.  This season consists of 16 episodes, and Season 4 has already been already been confirmed.  The Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 Premiere is tonight, June 4.

As the Fear the Walking Dead season three premiere begins, our families will be brought together in the vibrant and violent ecotone of the U.S.-Mexico border. International lines done away with following the world's end, our characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but family as well. Madison (Kim Dickens) has reconnected with Travis (Cliff Curtis), her apocalyptic partner, but Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) has been fractured by her murder of Andres. Madison's son mere miles from his mother, Nick's (Frank Dillane) first action as a leader saw Luciana (Danay Garcia) ambushed by an American militia group — the couple escaped death, but Nick no longer feels immortal. Recovering both emotionally and physically, Strand (Colman Domingo) has his sights set on harnessing the new world's currency, and Ofelia's (Mercedes Mason) captivity will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father.

Teasing some events of the Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 Premiere and beyond, There's more strife between the humans, with the Otto's family ranch being the staging ground for a defense against approaching waves of walkers. But as with most places of safety in the Walking Dead universe, what's safe from Walkers isn't always safe from other humans (and more often than not, the safer it is the more likely that others will want to take it from you).

There's a few spoilers in the video, including seeing Luciana (Danay Garcia) back in action after being wounded in last season's finale, and the time at the ranch will be violent as promised by showrunner Dave Erickson. Erickson describes the brothers of Jack and Troy as "incredibly dangerous and violent." Adding, "There is an ugliness that pervades this ranch and an ugliness in Jeremiah Otto and his youngest son, Troy."

The new season is about expanding their universe and realizing that anyone they meet is a potential foe. Travis has lost his son and needs to find redemption while Madison is starting to become a leader.

A new viral video for season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead introduces us to Jeremiah Otto Sr., the leader of the survivalist militia. The video is done like a late night television ad with actor Dayton Callie.
