Game of Thrones: "Sea Snake/Nine Voyages" Now Animated Series: GRRM
George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) confirmed that the Sea Snake/Nine Voyages series in development has gone from live-action to animated.
With the new year only hours away, Game of Thrones fans already know that they have a pretty big 2024 ahead of them with the return of HBO's prequel series House of the Dragon for a second season. But George R.R. Martin wasn't going to let the year end without some updates on what ther future could hold for the "Game of Thrones" Universe beyond 2024 – including one project making the move from live-action to animation.
In his New Year's Eve edition of Not a Blog, GRRM sang the praises of Netflix's anime Blue Eye Samurai ("Blue Eye Samurai' is very much its own thing, and it is magnificent. Even if you don't normally watch animation, give it a try. It's terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you'll love it") before offering an update on where things stand development-wise with the animated projects that are in development. GRRM noted that the last development round from a few years ago began with four animated shows "with some great talents attached." From there, GRRM shared that "Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts" for the four projects followed – but only two of the original four would move on.
As of right now, "none of them [animated projects] have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them," but GRRM added that development on those original projects "continues apace." We know that one of the two animated projects will be The Golden Empire, based on the Yi Ti dynasty of Essos – GRRM's take on Imperial China. But that wasn't the biggest news of GRRM's post.
The project focusing on the early adventures of Steve Toussaint's Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake (from House of the Dragon), has gone from being live-action to animated – with GRRM adding that it was "a move I support fully." The reason? It turns out that The Sea Snake/Nine Voyages would be way to pricey to do live action. "Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on," GRRM explained regarding why the series would require such a heft budget.
