How I Met Your Mother: Hannigan Has Spinoff Idea; Didn't Watch HIMYF
Alyson Hannigan shares her idea for a How I Met Your Mother spinoff and explains why she didn't watch How I Met Your Father.
Despite Hulu's Hilary Duff-starring spinoff series How I Met Your Father ending its run after two seasons, Alyson Hannigan (Lily) has an idea for a spinoff that she would like to see from the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Hannigan pitched that the series shouldn't be looking to tell a different story so much as to offer a different perspective – Marshall's (Jason Segel) perspective. "It's like, 'No, no, no, no kids. That's not how it happened,'" Hannigan explained. "And then it starts out with, 'We were a lot older, first of all …' and then we can just do the show again." As for the recent attempt at a spinoff, Hannigan shared that she didn't watch it – despite original series co-stars Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Alexis Denisof (also her husband in real life), and others making an appearance. "I should have probably watched that episode [Denisof's episode]," Hannigan added. "I just couldn't. It just made me sad because I'm like, 'oh, that's the same set.'"
Joining Duff on Hulu's spinoff sequel series were Chris Lowell (G.L.O.W.), Francia Raisa (Grown-ish), Tom Ainsley (Versailles), Tien Tran (Space Force), Suraj Sharma (God Friended Me), Brandon Micheal Hall (The Mayor), Josh Peck (Turner & Hooch), Ashley Reyes (American Gods) & Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City). Duff also executive produced the series, with Craig Thomas and Carter Bays also serving as executive producers and Adam Londy co-executive producing- with 20th Television as the studio.
In the near future, Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the present where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.
Created by series showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us), Hulu's How I Met Your Father was executive produced by Aptaker, Berger, How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays & Craig Thomas, and How I Met Your Mother director Pamela Fryman, as well as Adam Londy and Suzy Mamann Greenberg – with Duff also a producer.
