Shadowhunters to End After 3 Seasons with a 2-Hour Finale

We are just a few days away from the premiere of Marvel's Cloak & Dagger on Freeform, but the network is in the news for another one of their genre series, Shadowhunters. The network has announced that the series will not be back for a fourth season, but rather the have expanded the final third season by two episodes to wrap up the story with a two-hour finale. The series is based on the Mortal Instruments book by Cassandra Clare. The planned 10 episodes of this season, the first half of which just wrapped up on May 15th, covers book four and five of the series. The two-hour finale is planned to adapt the sixth and finale novel.

It said in a statement from the network:

We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite. However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending. The twelve episodes will air in spring of 2019. We want to thank our talented creators, producers, cast and crew along with our colleagues at Constantin for their hard work and dedication and to Cassie Clare for her incredible book series. We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama.

The series kicked off in 2016 as Freeform's strongest new scripted show and earned a second-season renewal. The ratings have been declining year-to-year since, but the show has a strong buzz and loyal following.
