'Star Wars Resistance' Season 1, Episode 19 "Descent": Kazuda Finally Rises [SPOILER REVIEW]

The first season of Disney Channel's Star Wars Resistance has been like the beginning of a World War II film. Viewers know that the peace and camaraderie they witness are only setting the stage for the drama to come. Last week's episode of the animated series, "The Disappeared," ended with a cliffhanger. In the latest episode "Descent," Kaz (Christopher Sean), Yeager (Scott Lawrence), Tam (Suzie McGrath), and the whole team not only fall off that cliff but hit every bump on the way down. Star Wars Resistance has finally crashed into its second act, and the Colossus will never be the same. Batten down the hatches, an ocean of spoilers ahead.

At the end of "The Disappeared," Kazuda Xiono returned to Yeager's shop after a successful mission only to be arrested by the First Order. "Descent" picks up seconds later, with Yeager and the team battling for their freedom. Tam, still unsure who to believe, gets taken by the First Order while Bucket appears to have fallen overboard. Running for their lives, Kaz finally comes out to Neeku (Josh Brener) as a Resistance spy, only to find that Neeku doesn't believe him. In the end it is the shellfolk and orphans Kel (Antony Del Rio) and  Ella (Nikki SooHoo) that rescue our heroes – and Bucket!

Stuck below decks, Yeagar and Kaz are forced to weight their priorities. They decide that getting word to the Resistance is most important, and therefore they have to take out the communications blanket. Unwilling to go on one of Kaz's patented blind-luck suicide missions, the pair instead decide to sink the Colossus to the bottom of the ocean so they can calmly swim up to the communications blocker on the tower and disable it.

This is their plan.

This is where the episode starts to lose the plot a little bit. After watching 19 episodes of Resistance showing the Colossus being shot at and barely holding itself together, there is just no way closing a few blast doors is going to make the station water tight. Yes, CB-23 manages to warn Captain Doza (Jason Hightower) and all of the doors close just in time. But come on! The whole station of rickety gangways and all sorts of doors and passageways magically sinks into the ocean and doesn't drown everyone? Not likely.

Anyway, Kaz, Yeager, and CB-23 manage to swim up and get a message out to the Resistance telling them what is going on on the Colossus. They even manage to get a reply before they are attacked by Commander Pyre (Liam McIntyre) and his troopers. There is a touching moment between Yeager and Kaz on the relay tower, with Yeager telling Kaz "I'd fight alongside you any day." Yeager gets his chance sooner than he thought when he sacrifices himself to the troopers in order to save Kaz, CB-23, and the Resistance message.

When the rebels aboard the Colossus listen to the Resistance message from General Organa (Carolyn Hennesy), however, it seems as if all is lost. The resistance is too busy fighting oppression across the Galaxy (and presumably dealing with Starkiller Base) to send anyone to help. Kaz, Neeku, Kel, Ella, CB-23, Bucket, and the shellfolk are on their own, and it looks like Tam has been turned against them by the kindly First Order interrogator.

In the past, Kaz would have whined or complained, or gone off to rescue Tam and Yeager without a plan or back-up. Finally, now that Kaz has no one else to turn to, he has found a bit of gumption within himself. At the very end of the episode we get a glimpse of the Resistance hero he was supposed to be all along, with him declaring:

"We are the Resistance now. All of us. First, we are going to free our friends. Then, I promise you, we're taking back the Colossus."

Only two episodes remain in Season 1 of Star Wars Resistance  and Kaz has the odds stacked against him. We will just have to wait and see if he continues to rise to the occasion.

The next episode of Star Wars Resistance "No Escape, Part 1" airs Sunday, March 10 at 10 p.m. on Disney Channel.
