Venture Bros Cast And Crew Speculate on Rusty Venture Reboots at SDCC
Sean Aitchison writes for Bleeding Cool from San Diego Comic-Con.
The Venture Bros. is returning for a long-awaited 7th season next month, and at San Diego Comic-Con, I was able to sit down with voice actors James Urbaniak (Doctor Venture) and Michael Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture) in a roundtable interview to ask a speculative question that yielded some interesting results.
* * *
How do you think Doctor Venture would respond to a reboot of the Rusty Venture cartoon happening in the world of the Venture Bros?
James Urbaniak: I think he would insist on doing the voice of Rusty Venture, and he would have a hard time with that rejection, which would be inevitable.
And they'd hire Dean instead.
James: Yeah, they'd hire Dean, and all he would do is give Dean notes. "You're not doing it right! I don't talk like that!"
Michael Sinterniklaas: I think Rusty now has the wherewithal to produce his own competing program where he is the voice and no one can tell him no.
James: This is a very good episode idea.
[Another reporter chimed in and asked what Dean's impression of his father would be like]
James: Well, young Rusty's voice is not unlike Dean's, [young Rusty voice] "He kind of sounds like this."
Michael: Is that your impression of Dean?
James: No, no, that's me doing young Rusty when they flash back. It's sort of an earnest, upper register.
Michael: I wonder in the strained relationship between Dean and pop [Doctor Venture] now, how much he would put into playing his father or if he would even want to.
James: This is getting way too speculative.
Michael: I mean, there was a time, a couple of seasons ago, where it would've been all he ever wanted and he might have done it with a weird posh accent because he's not good at impersonations.
James: Yeah, but the boys are kind of coming into their own in a way. They're semi-maturing
Michael: Beyond even prog-rock.

I was able to ask co-creator, writer, producer and voice actor of the series, Jackson Publick the same question when he joined the roundtable. His answer was just as interesting.
I asked James and Michael this as well, how do you think Rusty Venture would react to a reboot of the Rusty Venture cartoon being made?
Jackson Publick: [Bursts out laughing] I don't know that's — I should write that down. He's probably calling people all the time, trying to get it to happen, you know? Like, "So what's up with the reboot, we moving forward?" He was trying to get a broadway show made, and stuff like that, "Hamilton was HUGE, you see what I mean? There's a market for this!" No, he would love it, and then he would have some notes.

Guess this means I should get started on my Venture Bros. spec script…
