Over 700 French Comic Creators Bemoan Reduced Income And New Taxes – Threaten To Strike Or Leave Comics Forever
We all know how the French comics industry towers over every other in the Western world. But does that mean they are all rolling in Euros? Not a bit of it. Life hasn't been easy for comic creator in France. A few of them are throwing the towel.
A letter sent to the French Ministry Of Culture (with the accompanying cartoons) signed by over seven hundred comic book creators working in the French comics industry including the likes of Enki Bilal, Florence Cestac and Philippe Geluck first talks about the reductions of advances or royalty percentages paid to comic book creators and new schemes for working out such payments that seem to help the publishers more. But more specifically protests that creators now need to pay mandatory social security costs without any guarantee they will benefit from them, without employer contributions, and without the benefits that standard employees receive. And they protest that authors weren't consulted about the change. Via Google Translate,
While we are obviously in favor of a fixed pension system, and are not as opposed to a just reform, measured and concerted, do you think the authors may, in addition to their other sacrifices, divest 8% of their income to meet new social contributions? This is equivalent to almost a month of income, while most of them do not earn enough to pay taxes and struggle to make ends meet. We remind you, Madam Minister, that the income of half of cartoonists is (unfortunately) well below the minimum wage. It is urgent that this fact is taken into account, before reforming anything.
And that as a result, cartoonists were leaving the profession.
In a country where the unemployment rate is increasing, we create our own jobs. Better, we are responsible for thousands of others. In economic terms, the cultural industry is the most profitable fourth of France, such as your department is elated recently.Not to mention that the window is abroad, the book market represents 80,000 jobs and 5.6 billion euros. WE, AUTHORS, are at the origin of this wealth, this dynamic.
And unless the issue is addressed, they threaten striking in September. French Slate quotes Hubert of the National Union of Authors and Composers saying that
It comes at a bad time, and violently: I personally will spend €300 to €3,000 contributions per year. It will represent 8% of all my income.
And there are familiar arguments to the English-listening ear…
We are independent but we work with distributors, publishers, and do not participate at all our contributions. Editors consider us as employees, without taking the responsibilities that go with it.
And some have decided enough is enough. Bruno Maiorana of Garulfo and D quit comics last month due to financial concerns. Another well known author Philippe Bonifay did the same, writing on Facebook,
Today, I stop… The contemptible cowardice of some authors who accept unacceptable working conditions, indecent publishers who shamelessly abuse by the throat authors, booksellers no longer open all their boxes and, hidden behind their screens, eunuchs who vomit their unnecessary printing on albums…
On the other hand, the article says that 1500 comic creators live from their art in France, as opposed to just a hundred literary prose writers. And compared to, say, conditions in America… well, let's jut say their healthcare is never at threat,
