Iron Knives Out For Iron Man 2
The first Iron Man was one hell of a surprise. Expectations weren't exactly high, we were expecting a Transformers-style mixture of bombast and explosions. And instead we got a witty, engaging story of one man's journey from overconfident ass, pride coming before a fall, lifting himself up by his own iron bootstraps into becoming an even more overconfident ass. Iron Man didn't need to have been the best superhero movie made to date, but it was.
So naturally we were expecting it again. But such expectations seem to be being dashed.
Well, that didn't take long. Everything fun and terrific about "Iron Man," a mere two years ago, has vanished with its sequel.
Iron Man 2 is a travesty – a mind-numbingly dull, chaotic and often unwatchable muddle. It might even be the ultimate masterclass in how not to make a movie. 1 star.
Empire, which gave Kick Ass five stars, gives this film three, saying;
this sequel feels inessential, over-busy and a little, well, mechanical.
Iron Man 2 isn't as much fun as its predecessor but by the time the smoke clears it'll do.
it comes as little surprise that they chose to focus the action on Downey and Rockwell, as the two rank head and shoulders above the rest of the cast. I just wish they found room in between the one-liners for a few more explosions – 2 stars.
Will poor reviews impact on box office? Probably not, movies like this have a momentum that carries the audiences into the foyer. Although it isn't 3D, something seemingly demanded of a blockbuster right now. And the reviews where it really counts over at Rotten Tomatoes marks the movie as 85% fresh.
I think Iron Man 2 will do just fine…
I'm off to see Four Lions now. Looks like the appeal earlier in the week worked!
