SPOILER: Batman #8 And Nightwing #8

I rarely run proper spoilers on Bleeding Cool. When I do, it's usually because there's some wider point to be made, a new realisation, something that goes beyond the last page. Something that may entice people who wouldn't normally pick up the book to do so.

That's the case here.

If you are planning to read the Night Of The Owls crossover, specifically Batman #9, out today, you should stop reading immediately. Come back later.

I will say that if you do buy the comics, you'll want to read Nightwing after you've read Batman, because there are some spoilers that you'll get if you read Nightwing first. Okay. Serious now.

The Night Of The Owls crossover has presented itself as a conspiracy, with Bruce Wayne and his group fiercely outnumbered by another group who are literally part of Gotham itself. How do you fight your own city? It smacks of a thriller, a dark mystery, of deep structure, of horror and surprise.

Which makes the ending of Batman #9 both ludicrous and also inspiring when you realise that its also infected with the madness of Dark Knight Returns. You remember that scene, when returning to fight the Mutant gang, Batman basically turns up in a fucking tank?

Well, trapped by the Talons in his own mansion, Bruce Wayne does something equally as glorious.

He cosplays as Robocop.

Okay, this is from the ten page back up strip, and the artists interpretation of it here, is different from the main comic, where it's more muscular, more stylised, and larger. But in the back up… seriously, that's Robocop with bat ears, right?

Robobatman? Robatcop? Either way, I think Chris Sims just came.

Basically, if this can happen in what was being portrayed as a serious storyline, then anything is on the table. Indeed, there's one scene in the Bat Cave that may have eased you into accepting this new turn of events. But it doesn't. Aliens, genies, zombies, who knows what Batman will have to fight next, while tied to a giant telephone?
