James Cameron's Story Of Science Fiction Documentary Series Coming To AMC In 2018

James Cameron is creating a documentary series exploring the evolution of science fiction, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The six episode series will air on AMC in 2018. Cameron himself describes the series thusly on THR:

With this series, we are going back to the origins of sci-fi, following the DNA of these ideas back to the source. Without Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, there wouldn't have been Ray Bradbury or Robert A. Heinlein, and without them, there wouldn't be Lucas, Spielberg, Ridley Scott or me. As a filmmaker who specializes in science fiction, I'm interested in exploring the struggles and the triumphs that brought these incredible stories to life and seeing how art imitates life, as well as how science fiction imitates and sometimes informs science.

However, ComicBook.com, which, let's just say, likes to publish a lot of articles about The Walking Dead of questionable value but high clickability, has a totally different take on the show, claiming in its headline, "New AMC Series Will Explore The Science Behind The Walking Dead Zombies." They appear to be basing this on a description of the show in a press release that mentions The Walking Dead in passing:

From Star Wars and Avatar to The Hunger Games and "The Walking Dead," sci-fi has become a cornerstone of pop culture. In each episode of "James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction," Cameron introduces one of the "Big Questions" that humankind has contemplated throughout the ages, and reaches back into sci-fi's past to better understand how our favorite films, TV shows, books, and video games were born, and where the genre – and our species – might be going in the future. Cameron and his contemporaries, who have helped to fuel sci-fi's spectacular growth over the last several decades, debate the merits, meanings, and impacts of the films and novels that influenced them.

ComicBook.com believes this means the show will be about whether Walking Dead zombies could exist in real life, writing:

The Walking Dead has now become the standard in zombie theology, as the show is easily the most recognizable entry in the genre. We all know that the infection has been spread through the air, and even death can't keep you from turning into the undead.

How realistic is this possibility? Is this what zombies could really be like? AMC is going to try and figure out the exact answers to these questions.

So which is the real James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction? An examination of the history of the popular genre and how it relates to human civilization, or a show about how realistic The Walking Dead's zombie "theology" is? If we had to guess, we'd say, not the latter. But we suppose we'll find out when the show airs in 2018.

One thing we can learn from this is exactly how rumors are born. Some other sites have already begun to pick up the story of the AMC show exploring the science of The Walking Dead. Maybe if there's enough interest, AMC will actually make one.
