WWE Sends Undertaker Comic from Boom! Studios to Two Million Subscribers
Boom! Studios is making a lot of noise today – with Firefly Letter Column news, an exclusive free The Magicians comic to fans attending their NYCC panel and the announcement of a new Buffy creative team.
But they decided that wasn't enough, so they had their friends at WWE send the first chapter of their upcoming WWE: Undertaker original graphic novel to every WWE Network subscriber as a "thank you."
That's 20 pages of story featuring one of the most iconic pro-wrestlers to what some believe might be nearly two million subscribers just one day before his return to the ring at WWE: Super Showdown in Australia (one of WWE's most promoted events of the year).
You hear fans – and pros – lament the lack of direct advertising from big licenses to their core fanbases, wishing for the days of G.I. Joe comic ads during a GI Joe cartoon or Batman Damned McChickens at the drive-through (okay, maybe that would be excessive).
But Boom! Studios somehow got WWE in the right headlock and got them to connect directly with millions of their hardcore fans just before WWE: Undertaker FOCs, providing an extra boost for pre-orders at comic shops (and probably quite a few pre-order clicks on Amazon) before the October 31st release date.
That's the kind of synergy we wish we saw from Marvel or DC to the millions of people watching their TV shows and films who don't even know the comic books exist. Maybe the DC Universe Streaming App will help that.
But as for Marvel, maybe Linda McMahon can mention this to Marvel Chair Ike Perlmutter next time they brunch with Trump at Mar-A-Lago?
