Marvel Comics Presents #1 Pits Namor Vs Nagasaki (Spoilers)
Tomorrow's Marvel Comics Presents #1 is really heavy. Or rather, the Namor story is. The Wolverine story uptop sees soldier Logan fighting in World War II, defending an ancestor of the Scarlet Witch (possibly) against Nazi exploiters in some European village. The Captain America story is basically Greg Land's excuse to draw motorbikes and cheesy grins. But the Namor story…
Damn. Spoilers going forward. Big ones.
A wartime story, it has Namor fighting Nazi war criminals in Argentina after the fall of Berlin–revealed as a distraction for the lord of the sea…
All there to distract him from what the Allies are actually up to–the bombing of Hiroshima.
And then, when confronted abut this atrocity…
…denying that it has a sequel.
…which leads to one of the more insane moments in Marvel's new history. Namor, the Sub Mariner, versus The Fat Man, dropped by Bockscar on it's secondary target, Nagasaki, days afterwards.
…leaving utter destruction…
…and somehow, without saying how, surviving a direct impact.
Is this how Namor becomes an amnesiac? And even as tough as he is…point blank impact with a nuclear weapon? And how is he not the most radioactive person there?
It's not the only rewriting of Namor's history out tomorrow–look out for The Invaders #1. But it is the one I am finding the hardest to get my head around. All credit to Greg Pak, Tomm Coker and Michael Garland for getting me there.
