"Rick and Morty"… and Marty and Doc Brown? Christopher Lloyd Would Find "Back to the Future" Crossover "Fascinating"

Fans of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty had been counting down the months and days until Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's animated mayhem returned to their screens once more. That wait ended early last month with season premiere "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat" (reviewed here), where we got a crash course in "death crystals" and gained a deeper understanding of just how hard it would be to kill Rick Sanchez – and keep his dead.

"The Old Man and the Seat" (our review here) proved a brilliant balance between sharp social satire and a gut-punch examination of love, loss, control… and poop. Which lead to "One Crew Over the Crewcoo's Morty", which "heisted" our minds in such a way that it made it our favorite episode of the season so far (check out our review here).

After a week to sleep it all off, our dimension-hopping dysfunctional duo returned with "Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty" (treat yourselves to our humbly-enriching review here).  Now before we get to this weekend's midseason finale "Rattlestar Ricklactica" – we have a confession to make.

It's pretty obvious that the show's leads have some striking similarities to Marty McFly and Doc Brown from the Back to the Future film franchise. So we've had this "dream crossover" episode idea breakdancing around in our heads that there is a "Rick" in every dimension… except one. In that one, there's Doc Brown – who for some reason the "Ricks" don't seem to want to have anything to do with. He's left to a "Rick-less" existence… until our Rick and Morty find themselves in need of some "special perspective".

Well, it sounds like our fanfic would have a fan in none other than Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd.

Speaking at German Comic Con in Dortmund, Lloyd was asked about the reality of a Back to the Future 4. Though he didn't exactly have good news to offer on that front, he did reveal that he was a Rick and Morty fan ("I think it's fabulous. I've watched it, I love the humor in it, I love the characters") and that the possibility of a Marty-Doc-Rick-Morty would be a "fascinating" one – just as long as the storyline is "something really way out":

"I've had a fantasy that they make another Back to the Future, Back to the Future 4. And Back to the Future 4 — it's not happening — but if it did, Back to the Future 4 collides with Rick and Morty. Someway, somewhere in another time zone, in another space zone."

From the Upfronts earlier in the summer, there was the announcement of season 4 with an accompanying video (see below), and red carpet interviews with Harmon and Roiland that teased (jokingly?) a Rick and Morty future with Daniel Radcliffe and Kanye West in it. And then? Things got serious with the season 4 trailer…

Buckle in for disappointment because there's no way these episodes will be good enough for how long you waited. But maybe they will be? It's season four! It's sexy and smooth. Buckle in! Did I already say that? Definitely stay buckled in.

Rick and Morty is the Emmy-award-winning half-hour animated hit comedy series on Adult Swim that follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. Rick Sanchez is living with his daughter Beth's family and constantly bringing her, his son-in-law Jerry, granddaughter Summer, and grandson Morty into intergalactic escapades.

Rick and Morty stars Justin Roiland (Adventure Time), Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live), and Spencer Grammer (Greek). The series is created by Dan Harmon (Community) and Roiland, who also serve as executive producers.
