John Byrne's rise to four-color stardom began with his acclaimed three-year tour of duty as illustrator of Uncanny X-Men in 1977, and everything he touched over the next two decades was unquestionably golden. Most comic fans would consider his run on Fantastic Four to be one of the defining depictions of Marvel's First Family. His back-to-basics reboot of the Superman mythos with Man of Steel drew nationwide attention and mainstream coverage in Time and the New York Times.
