Legends of Tomorrow Season 3, Episode 16 Recap: I, Ava

No one thought anything strange about Agent Ava Sharpe (Jes McCallan) until Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) told Gideon to delete a file about her and that Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) can never find out. Once that happened, theories ran wild from her being an anachronism, a clone, a robot, Booster Gold's sister and even more wild ideas. Last night's episode gave us the answer as Agent Gary Green (Adam Tsekhman) came to the team when Ava goes missing. Turns out she just went off the grid to try and get over Sara dumping her, but Sara, Gary and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) discover that her parents are just actors and her back story was fake and it lead to a time on Earth that the Time Bureau was restricted from, 2213, so of course they go to that time and find out that Ava is a clone from a series of security guard/warriors of some kind. They find this out by sneaking into a building they're not supposed to be in and the penalty for it is execution. Ava follows them there and learns the truth, and they must fight a legion of Ava's to get out alive and back to the borrowed "mother ship". This sort of patches things up between Ava and Sara and now they have a new target, to find out why Rip didn't tell Ava the truth.

There are two other stories going on in this. One of them is simple, Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) asks Zari (Tala Ashe) to train Mick (Dominic Purcell) on how to use his new totem. Mick, of course, has little interest in training and is more interested in eating… most of it including pork, something Zari doesn't eat and it's during Ramadan. This is more of a character story where the two sort of find common ground, but at the same time it keeps these two powerful characters busy while the other's are working.

To me the main story is that they discover that the modern day Vixen must have finally lost her totem due to Amaya losing hers, but she is still trying to be a vigilante/hero and got hurt in a fire. Nate (Nick Zano) and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) go to check on her and they find Kuasa (Tracy Ifeachor) at the hospital. She's there to watch over her sister. Nate talks Kuasa into helping him get Amaya's totem back and they send Wally back to the Waverider to keep Amaya busy. But Kuasa has a plan of her own, she trades Nate for the totem, something Mallus is more than happy to do. And she bails, leaving Nate in Damien Darhk's (Neal McDonough) hands. She see Nate as a threat to her very existence as he is not her grandfather. Mallus, talking through Nora (Courtney Ford) plans to use Nate to get the other totems and leaves Damien behind to tortue Nate, but his heart isn't into it. He's worried about his daughter and the two end up bonding as Damien opens up to Nate. Kuasa returns the totem to Amaya, who is upset that she left Nate in danger and tells Kuasa she's not worth of the totem and she's glad Mari got it instead. Nora is back and has turned on Damien for not torturing Nate. Amaya and Wally show up to rescue Nate. Nora can use her magic to turn Wally's lightning against him. And Amaya's totems is still keyed to Nora, but that changes during the fight. She holds her own until Kuasa arrives and frees Nate, but Mallus pulls the Water Totem from her chest, killing her. Amaya wants to attack but Wally grabs her and Nate and speeds them out of there.

The episode ends and we learned that all the totem holders felt the death of Kuasa. And at this point, the Legends have five of the six totems while Mallus just has the water totem. You think that would put them in the lead, but these are the Legends we're talking about.

Next episode is the penultimate of the season called Guest Starring John Noble and it looks like Legends will have to save a young Barack Obama from Gorilla Grodd… and I think Ray ends up working on the set of Lord of the Rings.
