Update On The Update

Well, as no doubt you've all read on Newsarama and the like, that according to Stuart Moore and Joe Quesada, Stuart Moore is resigning, to follow personal projects, Marvel Knights is being trimmed back to its original vision, and MAX is not being cancelled but, indeed, expanded. No mention has been made of Moore's assistant, Bronywn Taggart, who we were told was dismissed by Marvel.

Which leaves a number of people who say they were told by Marvel that MK and MAX were both going and this was why Stuart was leaving, rather confused. They tell me that what Marvel were saying earlier in the week, is now being directly contradicted.

Either way, Marvel's statements to Newsarama can't be contradicted by their actions. And in conversation with Marvel, I find it hard to believe that it was ever anything other than what they said. But there are too many people who say different, see it as spin and wonder what the real story is.

We wish Stuart Moore good fortune in his next ventures.

We understand that Stuart Moore has resigned from Marvel Comics. And both the Marvel Knights and MAX line are to be closed.

Editor of the Marvel Knights line, Stuart has been responsible for bringing in a lot of talent and working well with them. At DC, his work on Helix, then Vertigo saw a number of projects through, including Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's Transmetropolitan and Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher until he left to pursue other interests.

Recruited by Marvel, he was to provide a sense of continuity, editing Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Punisher and soon became one of Marvel's most prominent employees.

He was present at Marvel's recent British expedition to the Bristol convention where he promoted many MAX and Marvel Knights titles, such as Alias and Punisher: The War Where I Was Born.

Marvel Knights was the line set up by Bob Harras and run by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, forming the basis of what would become the new Marvel philosophy when Harras was fired and Joe Quesada became editor-in-chief. Publishing slightly more mature versions of Marvel superheroes, and going after brand name creators to add new life to old properties, Marvel Knights had both successes and failures but in all, succeeded in revitalising the Marvel stable of characters. But of late, it hasn't been bringing the instant sales and attention to projects that it used to.

MAX is a relatively recent project, books set in the Marvel Universe (or a Marvel universe) for an older readership, including Alias, Cage and the newly announced Punisher: The War Where I Was Born.

It is understood that a number of titles will migrate from Marvel Knights and MAX to the standard Marvel Universe imprint, such as Punisher, Daredevil and Alias although whether the creative teams will stay the same, is not yet known.

But not all of the titles will survive. Look for a number of imminent Marvel Knights and MAX cancellations, and cancellations in the Marvel Universe as well.

I understand that these events, combined with the recent dismissal of Stuart Moore's assistant, led to Moore's decision to leave the company of which, only two weeks ago, he was singing the praises. He was offered relocation to other books planned for the Marvel Universe, but has decided to resign and focus on his Zendra book for Penny Farthing Press.
