Armor Up!
Andy Fisher writes,
On Kickstarter until Wednesday Nov. 12. Estimated shipping time is February. Armor Up! is an all ages action comic about four siblings that defend earth from alien monsters.
Sometime at the beginning of the year I shuffled into my favorite comics retailer to see it had been re-organized. Nothing shocking mind you, just a few things moved around. The most obvious difference was that the all ages monthly comics had been set shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the crop. I stood there, looking at the 70 to 100 feet of wall covered in dark images of super heroes grimacing at each other, and then looked back at the young readers comic stand. It was chest high, and about an arms length wide.
I know this is nothing new to a lot of you, it wasn't really news to me either. But seeing that small rack of floppies sit shyly to the side of the giant chest pounding gorilla of super hero comics really bothered me.
If you where standing behind me in the shop, you probably would have seen three emoticons shoot out of my charlie brown shaped head. A confusing scribbly mark, (thinking about the sustainability of an industry that doesn't bring in young readers) a light bulb, (people should make more of these to bring in young readers!) and then a smiley face, (the people I'm thinking of should be me!)
I went on an all ages and young adult comics tear. What my retailer didn't have, I picked up at the library. What the library didn't have, I picked up on Comixology. It was a month straight of kids comics, young adult comics, teen comics and manga. And you know what? I read a lot of good comics.
Something felt missing to me though. Where was all the stuff that felt like Saturday morning action cartoons? Obviously not on Saturday mornings. Surely there was a home for those concepts in comics, right?
That's what Armor Up! is. Yes, the exclamation point is a part of the title.
The idea spawned out of a 60 minute sketch a day exercise I had finished last year. I took the initial concept developed there, and put them into an action comic that would have had 8 year old me putting buckets on my head and battling 30 foot alien monsters.
The first issue is done and can be read at www.AndyFisherArt.com. Just click the little Armor Up! link on the middle of the page.
