Welcome DC Comics' Hottest New Writing Talent, PEZ-BANANA?

Where does DC Comics find new comic book writing talent? Tracking down the writers of hot new indie comic books is one tactic, looking for screenwriters or novelists who want to work in comic books is another. Sometimes an editor makes the switch. Sometimes the publisher fancies a go, there are many routes to writing Batman.

But this may be the first time when a novelty fruit-flavoured candy dispenser has made the jump to writing a major DC Comics title.

Originally the solicited credits for DC's Superman: Leviathan Rising Special #1 included writers Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Greg Rucka, and Marc Andreyko. A heady list indeed. But, for some unknown reason, the Diamond Previewsworld listing has had Andreyko drop out, and replaced by PEZ-BANANA.

It's unknown what PEZ-BANANA's previous comic book writing achievements may have been, I can't find any indie books written by them. It's possible they have been working uncredited on a number of movie or TV projects.

Some will see it as tokenism of course, as until now neither the Pez nor the Banana communities have had much representation in the comic book industry. Odds are that certain people will take to YouTube asking how PEZ-BANANA could get such a prestigious job in comic books, when their own efforts in creating comics and fostering hatred have failed to see them picked up to write Batman.

But if you are writing a comic book about a major crime organisation seizing control of the Metropolis organised crime scene – as well as those who seek to stop it – having someone who has first-hand life experience of the criminal underground fruit distribution system, as well as the way big business repackages sucrose into brighter, more attractive formats to appeal to children and adults alike, may prove invaluable for the comic book.

The Superman: Leviathan Rising Special is published on May 29th. Hopefully DC won't bow to public pressure and drop PEZ-BANANA from the creative team by then.
