Detective Comics #1000 Sold 600,000+, Tops 2019 Direct Market Chart

Detective Comics #1000, was named the bestselling comic book of 2019 earlier today by Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise. Back in September, Bleeding Cool got the word that it had approached 600,000 copies. But remember, that's only in comic book stores. In comparison, both Asterix And The Chieftain's Daughter and Dog Man: Fetch 22 sold five million copies each towards the end of the year. So Batman still has quite some way to go.

And for trade paperbacks/graphic novels, DC also topped the charts with Watchmen, thirty-three years after it was first published, and a perennial seller since. It probably helped to explain to somewhat the hell was going on in HBO's egg-obsessed Watchmen sequel from Damon Lindelof.

"These rankings demonstrate how Batman continues to be an important part of our publishing success, in comic books, original graphic novels and collected editions," said DC Publisher Dan DiDio, as he worked out that basically one in every two comics DC publishes seems to be Batman-related these days, wondering if he can push it even further in 2020. "I'm incredibly happy to see how enthusiastically fans responded to Detective Comics #1000, especially during Batman's 80th anniversary and to be the best-selling comic book two years in a row is a fantastic achievement." Although having around fifty variant covers probably helped too.

Last year it was Action Comics #1000. Will Wonder Woman #750, Flash #750 and Robin 80th Anniversary already lined up for 2020 match these, or are we looking at diminishing returns now? What about Detective Comics #1027, could that be a thing as well?

And while Marvel Comics trounced DC Comics' overall marketshare for 2019 by around ten points, it is also worth noting that DC Comics improved their marketshare for the year by around three points.
