Everything Eddie Brock Knew About Venom Was Wrong – Again (Venom #11 Spoilers)
Back in 2003, Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos introduced a new storyline to The Spectacular Spider-Man, with a sick Eddie Brock and Venom in crisis. Why?
It turned out that the original bonding of Venom to Eddie Brock wasn't down to a mutual hatred of Spider-Man, but because Brock's cancer causes the release of adrenaline, which Venom feeds on.
And his uncle went the same way.
Brock dies after the symbiote leaves him for Spider-Man, not wanting a diseased host. Spider-Man tricks the symbiote into again bonding with Brock, reviving him.
And so it is for a while. Mark Millar and the Dodsons told a story in Marvel Knights Spider-Man in which Brock experiences a crisis of faith and decides to sell the symbiote, knowing he will rapidly die from his cancer without it, intending to donate the $100 million received from the sale to charity on the grounds that the symbiote would find another host once he dies anyway.
Brock next appeared rapidly succumbing to cancer, working at a soup kitchen under Martin Li. Brock where he is unknowingly cured of his cancer by Li and believes it to be a miracle.
After Brock is attacked by the new Venom, he is enveloped in a new white symbiote forged from the remnants of the Venom symbiote in his body bonding with his white blood cells charged with Li's healing energy, becoming Anti-Venom.
And so one and so on and so on. Eddie and Venom eventually merge again, and new truths are discovered about what the symbiotes are. And today? Another revelation. We already learned that as well as his uncle dying from cancer, so did his sister.
Today, however, that is all reversed. The cancer was a crock, Brock. All of it.
But hey, hang on…
How about what the symbiote, outside of the Brock, told Spider-Man? So scared of losing Brock that at one point it would not combine with Brock because of his cancer?
Why resist so much? Born and bred in the briar patch? Or is there some serious levels of cognitive dissonance going on here?
And what was cured? And if the cancer lie was to keep them attached, then what about Brock selling the suit? Why would the symbiote allow that?
Many questions to ask Donny Cates – and this isn't even the only major revelation about Eddie Brock in this issue…
