Free On Bleeding Cool: Pat Shand & Manuel Preitano's Destiny, NY – Chapter One
Pat Shand writes,
Adulting is hard. Adulting when you used to be a magical girl is way harder.
I'm Pat Shand, a comic book writer and novelist who has worked on Robyn Hood, Angel, Charmed, Iron Man, and more. I'm currently in the final week of a Kickstarter campaign to fund my creator-owned graphic novel, Destiny, NY.
Destiny, NY is a 120-page graphic novel by me and artist/co-creator Manuel Preitano about love, loss, magic, cats, coffee, sex, growing up, and the way we build our own destinies every day. It's about growing pains and self-discovery through the lens of a (slightly) alternate version of New York City where magic is a real and accepted part of everyday life. It's about that feeling when you look back at who you used to be, and find yourself unaware how you've become the person you are today.
Also, it's about two magical ladies in love.
I always wondered what happened to magical kids after they completed their prophecies. Take, for example, someone like Harry Potter, who has been told his entire life that the greatest thing he'll ever do will happen before he turns 18. Once Harry saves the world and completes his destiny, how can he come to terms with settling into a common adulthood? How can he become an accountant, or a florist, when he was told his entire life that his destiny was to change the world?
Our lead character, Logan McBride, is in a similar position. She was the subject of a prophecy when she was young, and now that she has completed that destiny, she scrambles to find meaning in a world that is leaving her behind. And she has seen what has happened to other Prophecy Kids like her… much like the child stars of our world, they often burn out in the worst possible ways.
Now, Manuel and I are aware of how many stellar comic books are out in the world. Taking a chance on a new book, especially one on Kickstarter, can be risky. We are passionate about Destiny, NY though and we want to share that passion for the story and the characters… so we have decided to release the entire first chapter for free here, so you can sample the story before pledging.
We hope you enjoy Logan and Lilith's story as much as we enjoyed creating it.
As of writing this, our campaign has 8 days to go and just about $11,000 to raise. If you pledge to any of our reward tiers that include a physical book ($25 and up), message the code MEETYOURDESTINY along with your pledge and you will receive an exclusive print by Manuel Preitano, pictured above.
