French Creator Unions Reach A Deal Over Digital Rights

auAurélie Filippetti, the French Minister Of Culture has closed a deal between book publishers and authors' unions (including those of comic book creators) over contract guidelines for digital media publications, two years in the making.

Yes, they do things differently in France.

The new agreement will demand that digital publishing provisos be in a separate contract to the print publishing version, that just as in print, digital works need to be actively and timely sold and promoted in order for the rights not to revert back to the author, in digital or in print, and contracts can be terminated as a result. And the lowest "base" payment for an author has been raised to take into account of the digital market. Contracts can be renegotiated by both author and publisher before they end, and editors will make themselves available to their writers at least once a year during the contract.

The French Comics Authors' Union will release the details for the
Paris Book Fair later this year.
