Gentlemen Pickle Present A Prat
Prat by Gentlemen Pickle. Writer – Buddy Beaudoin. Pencils and Inks – Brennan Freemantle. Color Artist – Sara Machajewski. Kickstarter campaign ending !0/18/2015
Buddy Beaudoin writes,
Prat is a story of family togetherness set to the soundtrack of flying bullets and cries for help.
Prat follows cousins Pike and Peter Prat as they band together with the rest of the Prat family to rid the world of a crime boss named Maxwell Clarke. Spanning the globe between New York and England, the body count rises as the Prat family exacts their revenge on Clarke and his hapless henchmen.
To be real, this is a book that I've wanted to do for a long time. I've been putting out creator owned comics for a few years now, on my own, self publishing. It's purely a passion project. There is absolutely no money in it, unless you're really good at counting backwards. I met Brennan, my artist and partner at Gentlemen Pickle, at a convention in Connecticut and sent him the script the following week. This is Brennan's first book, somehow (he's amazingly talented), and he has put all of his life into making this thing happen.
Sometimes, in life, you need a hand. Those are our circumstances. We released our first book in August of 2015 at the same convention we had met the year prior. Our first run of 185 books were gone by the time the convention closed on Sunday, and we knew we were onto something.
We want to do this book right, and we want to do right by this book. That means that we need to be paying our artists. We lost our first color artist, Joel Earley, to some scheduling conflicts, and found the wonderful talent of Sara Machajewski on a recommendation from a friend (Thanks Russ). We love her. Her art is terrific.
So, in order to make this book happen for us, and for the 185 people that purchased issue one, and for the rest of the folks out there looking for a book like Prat, we turned to Kickstarter. We've collaborated with some other great artists, all local to our area, to bring people some amazing and exclusive variant covers. We've gotten a generous package offering from FanboysInc that we turned into a reward. I'm excited to bring those things to people.
Getting to do this with my life is really the greatest experience I've ever had. Meeting new people, meeting other comic creators, meeting people at conventions who are so socially awkward and sensory overloaded that they can barely speak – but somehow are weathering that storm to find things that they love and appreciate and are consumingly passionate about… This is all unreal to me still, that I get to do these things.
So, I want to thank anyone who takes the time to read this, or who takes the time to go look at our tiny book. You guys are changing lives.
