Howard Chaykin Lampoons the Sordid History of Comics in New Image Series This August
Fresh off 2017's controversial Divided States of Hysteria, Howard Chaykin is launching a new series at Image Comics in August called Hey Kids! Comics!. The book, debuting on August 8, appears to be a dramatization of the history of the comic book industry itself, where as the solicit claims "everyone was guilty of something." The names, however, have been changed.
Check out the solicit below:
HEY KIDS! COMICS! #1
STORY / ART: HOWARD VICTOR CHAYKIN
COVER: DON CAMERON
AUGUST 8 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99
SERIES PREMIERE
HEY KIDS! COMICS! takes its cue from nearly a century of turbulence and triumph, despair and drama in the comic book racket.
Artists and writers, con men and clowns, ganefs and gangsters, create the foundations of today's biggest entertainment business—or at least the tail that wags the dog.
Some of it really happened, and the names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty…
… although in the end, everyone was guilty of something.
Chaykin gave a more detailed description of the comic, and its intent, on Facebook back in March, writing:
As long as there have been comics, there's been a fascination with the behind-the-scenes personal drama, lurid flimflammery, and just plain out and out larceny that contributed to their making.
HEY KIDS—COMICS! is a fictionalized history of more than a half century of turbulence and triumph, despair and drama in the comic book racket.
Where aspiring artists climbed into business and bed with conmen and clowns, ganefs and gangsters, to create the foundations of today's biggest entertainment business—or at least, the tail that wags the dog.
Much of it really happened, and the names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty alike…and since everyone was guilty of something, no one was really all that innocent.
Look for this in stores in August.
