Comic book production isn't always smooth, and sometimes even the best creative instincts need a reality check. Talking on John Siuntres' Word Balloon podcast, writer Matthew Rosenberg revealed last-minute drama surrounding the logo for his new Image Comics series, If Destruction Be Our Lot. The series, co-written with his brother Mark Elijah Rosenberg and drawn by Andy MacDonald, follows a lonely animatronic Abraham Lincoln robot searching for purpose and connection in a post-human world. But before the first issue even hits shelves in May (and goes to FOC this weekend), the team had to scrap their original, ambitious logo design after pushback from Image Comics.

"I had this idea for the logo that was like the Constitution script font with all this digital distortion on it… it looked really cool to me," he explained. "I was super into it. I thought it was perfect for the book." The team pushed forward with the stylised, script-heavy design, complete with digital glitch effects meant to evoke a broken, post-apocalyptic feel. But when it reached Image Comics publisher, Eric Stephenson and others at Image, the feedback was clear: it simply wasn't readable enough. "Eric and the Image team were like, 'This is really hard to read. We need to change it,'" Rosenberg recalled. "And I fought for it for a little bit, but ultimately they were right. My instincts were wrong on this one." The original logo was ditched in favour of this cleaner, more legible version. Rosenberg contrasted it with the logo for the sequel series In Good Hands with Bad Company, which kept more of the experimental flair he originally wanted.

"The new one is much better. It's clean, it's readable, it pops on the shelf. The sequel logo got to be a little weirder because we already had the conversation once," he laughed. "Lesson learned: sometimes you have to kill your darlings — or in this case, your distorted constitutional script." He also credited designer Tim Daniel, who worked on the final logo, and the collaborative nature of Image's process for turning a potential headache into a stronger final product. "Tim came in and nailed it. It's a good reminder that you're not making these books in a vacuum. You need people who will tell you when something isn't working, even if it hurts your feelings a little."
