Launching Surgeon X At London's Shard, With Karen Berger And Sara Kenney

Last night, on the 22nd floor of The Shard building, looking out across a lit up London, Sara Kenney and Karen Berger launched the new Image Comics title Surgeon X, by Kenney and John Watkiss, with a litany of comic book and medical guests.

The comics, set in a post-antibiotic post-apocalyptical London has received a grant from the Wellcome Trust for its development, including an app that transforms the comic into a new narrative device, containing documentary, graphic representations of the comic book world, audio explanations of the process and medical realities and other forms of narration to back up the comic book narrative.

It's quite the thing.

In the video above, ex-DC Vertigo EIC and founder Karen Berger introduces Kenney, apologises for Watkiss's absence (he is, appropriately, sick) talking about her involvement with the project, and Kenney introduced representatives of the Wellcome Trust and one of the medical scientists behind the work.

Here's what the evening looked like, attendees included big-name comic book creators Dave Gibbons, John and Liliana Bolton, Mark Buckingham, Si Spurrier, Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Allison Sampson, Rian Hughes, Jamie Delano, Tim Pilcher,  Doug Braithwaite, John McCrea, and a whole lot of doctors.

With food provided by a Michelin-star chef, and cocktails from a highly awarded , all delivered by staff wearing sheep masks, in accordance with imagery from the comic book, it was compared by some to a certain Tundra UK party in the early nineties at the Natural History Museum. Instead, we enjoyed the splendid offices of marketing agency Jellyfish.
