Mahmud Asrar Returns to X-Men, Takes Over From Leinil Yu
Leinil Yu has been the lead artist on the main ongoing X-Men series written by Jonathan Hickman that span out of House Of X and Powers Of X. He has had a couple of fill-ins along the way, one issue by R.B. Silva, one by Matteo Buffagni and one by Mahmud Asrar, where he replaced the solicited RB Silva (see art below). But it looks as if Asrar may have more of an ongoing role.
Last month Mahmud tweeted out "I'm working slower than I'd like to but I think I'm putting out my better X-Men pages to date" but he just replied to a further enquiry that asked if he was working on issue #13 of X-Men by saying "Yes, and 14 also… and some more too."
While Leinil just tweeted "nearly done with my X-men run. It's been an honor. I'd like to thank @Marvel and @JHickman for the honor of working on this project. X-men (Lee/Portacio era) is what got me excited in comics. It's a dream project for me. Lastly, Thank you, readers!"
Mahmud Asrar is a Turkish comic book artist who co-created Dynamo 5 with Jay Faerber, published by Image Comics. This led to him being picked up for work at Marvel and DC, including Ultimate Comics: X-Men. Since then he also drew X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men Red.
X-Men #13, due in October, will be part of the X Of Swords event, according to this list but this suggests that Asrar will not only draw the series of that tie-in but will keep it going into the immediate future, at least. X-Men #10 and X-Men #11 are still scheduled for July and August, by Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu. And then we'll see.
