Mark Waid, Comic Book Prophet? Tomorrow's Champions Is About Punching Nazis (Spoilers)

stl032715

Tomorrow sees the publication of Champions #5 by Mark Waid, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba and Edgar Delgado.

And they show eerie prescience.

Because when this comic book was put together,  no one knew that white supremacist Richard Spencer would be punched (twice) in the street because of his loudly expressed views.

Or that it would become a hot debating point with Marvel writers Nick Spencer and Warren Ellis amongst those taking opposing sides on the issue.

Mark Waid placed himself firmly on the punch-a-Nazi side of the argument.

It has been noted that his current run on Champions has focused on finding other solutions to punching problems away.

Well, in tomorrow's Champions #5, they have to fight… racism! A town sheriff happy to see mosques burn down. Gay beatings. Homeless shot. Swastikas sprayed. Nooses hung. That sort of thing. And indeed may be instigating it. Basically… a Nazi. And a town that either joins in, looks, the other way or normalises the behaviour, trying to mange the worst of it. And people who won't stand up for fear of losing their job.

Oh and Gwenpool joining the team. An outsider, someone from another reality, who sees this one as full of tropes, expecting some kind of villainous mind control enemy to emerge. And while the Champions bemoan that they just can't hit someone to solve racism, as there's nothing to punch.

So Gwenpool asks "why can't we just punch him?"

Where's Captain America when you need him?

Here's a preview…
