Marvel Comics' Rarest – Silver Surfer: Black #2 True Believers Variant, Limited to 25, at San Diego Comic-Con
Last week, in an article about San Diego Comic-Con, we mentioned that Marvel Comics gave out rare variant covers of Silver Surfer Black #2, featuring Carnage riding the Surfer's board. And pointed out how much they were going for on eBay, up to $180.
We also mentioned that we had heard from retailer discussion in the Bayfront bar during the show, that Marvel Comics were also giving out an extremely limited edition of Silver Surfer: Black #2, with a black-and-white cover, a certificate of authenticity and an even more limited print run. And just handed out at the Marvel booth to people they considered 'worthy'. Who may not realise that it is a very desired Marvel comics collectable.
Dubbed the True Believers variant, no one had thought to put one of those on eBay. And collectors were are interested in finding a copy had no idea who to ask, where they may be or what condition they are in by now. And no one at Marvel confirming anything to any inquiring minds.
That was then. Today we found one, on Instagram. Given to a Marvel superfan from the Philippines, for his efforts in promoting Marvel at home and helping fellow fans while at the show.
With a COA signed by Marvel EIC CB Cebulski.
The recipient writes,
I probably had the biggest surprise of Comic-Con today. C.B. told me to meet him. When I saw him, he thanked me for being a great Marvel fan and ambassador. He presented a gift and it's Marvel Comics' rarest book to date. Only 25 copies in existence given to special fans. He then handed me number 1 of 25! HOW COOL IS THIS!?!? 😭 Thank you VERY VERY MUCH C.B.!!! My heart is full!!! I will ALWAYS #MakeMineMarvel#JiggySDCC
Look forward to Marvel Comics doing similar at future shows… and for collectors to get in touch offering three-figure sums…
