Marvel Stop Publishing Mass Market Miracleman Digital Editions
Reading this scene in this week's Miracleman #5, sealed inside a bag as we warned you about, I wondered how it was going to have to be neutered for the digital mass market version.
Marvel have sold two versions, of the digital comic, a Mass Marvel version on its own digital app and store, with "bottoms and swearies" as Terry Wiley calls them, removed, or covered up. Because the Marvel App is labelled as suitable for 12 years old.
The second version is available with the first through ComiXology along with other Marvel MAX titles. After there was considerable annoyance at the last issue removing the N-word in both digital versions and in print, Marvel have chosen to publish Miracleman in sealed bags, though some retailers are also choosing to remove those bags before putting them on sale. It's not something afforded to other Marvel MAX titles, but then they don't have a graphic childbirth scene coming up, as Miracleman does in #9. And the fear of little kids flicking through copies of a comic with a bright shiny superhero on the front, in store – and then showing their parents.
It's the eighties again, it really is.
So what's the solution to this problem for the Mass Market Digital versions on the Marvel App? Simple. They aren't doing them any more. The website only shows issues 1-4, there is no #5 and its likely there won't be any more to come. Which avoids the problem of drawing underwear onto an image of a woman giving birth.
