New Comic Store in Worksop, England, Part of the Town Centre's Revival
Worksop is the largest town in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest. A population of around 45,000, it's been going through a tough time of late, and no Robin Hood to save it.
Though comic-wise, Adam Hall may count. He's been running an online comics business for some time now, Comic-Quest.co.uk – and has now taken it from the web to the bricks 'n' mortar, opening on Worksop's Hardy Street.
The street in question, at the town centre, had seen concern from local businesses as bus stops were removed in favour of a nearby bus station, with lower footfall as a result.
But the arrival of Comic Quest and other recent stores are seen as contributing to a revival of the street.
The Worksop Guardian quotes Adam Hall as saying "For a lot of people, shops like this one are nostalgic. I remember my brother taking me to the comic book store as a kid, and my collection over the years just grew and grew, until I decided to make a business out of it."
The store stocks Golden and Silver Age comics, as well as new releases, and also specialises in imported American soft drinks. And they are also looking to buy local comic collector's collections…
Bleeding Cool covers the closing – and opening – of comic book stores. We're more likely to discover the former rather than the latter, as the result of an active fanbase, so please let us know when a new store in your neighbourhood is opening – richjohnston@gmail.com
