Prepare Yourself For Pure Genius In Saga #30
[**SPOILERS for Saga #30 below!!]
I want you to do me a favor. Take a really deep breath. Inhale, exhale, and proceed…that's what I had to do after reading the new issue of Saga. It's pretty hard not to just be wide-eyed walking around like a zombie after such an incredible issue. From Image Comics, written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Fiona Staples, Saga #30 has it all. So you'll probably remember how tortured and heartbroken we all felt way back at the end of issue 19 when we saw this image below and Hazel's narration "This is the story of how my parents split up." From that moment, the shit literally hit the fan in so many different ways it made it difficult to see straight. Even if, Vaughan threw us a few arrows of hope here and there, we already knew, that was it…Alana and Marko were splitting up, and it was only a matter of time before it happened.
Our foundation of the family, the bounty hunters, and the Robot Kingdom, became completely jumbled up. I don't know about you, but I wasn't sure if anything would be the same again. Vaughan had be convinced that things would just keep getting worse, and in many ways they did progress in a very chaotic destructive way. That's the thing about Vaughan's writing. He writes in such a brilliant way, that you can really never underestimate him. As a reader, I've pretty much decided that whenever I pick up an issue of Saga I have to make sure I'm mentally prepared for whatever he throws at me.
This issue started off very reminiscent of past powerful issues, with Hazel's narration. While we always get little bits and pieces of her narration, there are some issues where Vaughan really utilizes it in a passionate, meaningful way. The opening page, which I've posted above sets the intense tone for issue #30, and a theme of relationships and how they come in and out of our lives. That foundation carries us throughout the issue making for one of the greatest installments yet. Vaughan brings all of the separate routes that we've been following for so long to extreme pivotal moments and it is crazy!
So, as you know, Marko has been with Prince IV and Ghus, while Alana has been with Hazel, Klara, and Dengo who has Prince IV's baby. I had gotten use to the idea of things being this way forever. I knew that eventually someone would cross paths with the team of Gwendolyn, Lying Cat, and Sophie, but I had pretty much told myself time and time again that Alana and Marko would never meet again. Then something magical happened…
Yep, just take that in. No, I didn't cry tears of joy or anything…I bet you are though! Come on? What a wonderful moment to see, Alana and Marko together again, finally. However, the catch? Hazel has been taken by that group of crazy characters, and it's all Dengo's fault. Now that I've mentioned some super heavy spoilers, I'm going to stop there and not reveal anymore, because yes there are a ton more insane moments in the issue! The madness doesn't end there. Overall, I'm reiterating that this is one of the best issues of Saga yet. Vaughan continues to show his fantastic abilities as a writer, and Fiona Staples is well…pure artistic genius. She allows us to venture to a world much different than the one we are used to and spend time with characters that leave a mark on your imagination forever.
Unfortunately, now it's time to prepare for Saga withdrawal because this is the last issue before their hiatus. Luckily, Vaughan provides some tips for handling such things in his letter at the end. Be sure to pick up Saga #30 if you haven't already, and prepare yourself for one intense ride.
