A Lost Monkey In Old London Town

Lewis Campbell writes;

LM-page-1-lwI come from an illustration and animation background, graduating with a Masters from the Royal College of Art in 2002.

I've always loved comics and been highly influenced by the medium. I've tried my hand at comics before but only now am I really making a dedicated attempt at writing and drawing one.

For years I've made paintings and drawings that focus on the idea of otherworldly beings just around the corner – the world of Lost Monkey as I like to call it.

The name Lost Monkey symbolises the potential ideas and imaginings that fill an artist's head – just bubbling under the radar of the subconscious.

LM-page-2-lwIt always seemed to me that my images had a suggested narrative to them. The beginning of a story- or the middle of a film perhaps. I rarely knew what this narrative was but I always wanted to find out.

The first Issue of Tales of Lost Monkey focuses on two boys of a similar age. One is an escaped shaolin Monk, the other is a somewhat betrodden school kid who just can't cut a break. Still not interested? Okay, well, there's a ten foot raven as well!

Looking at some of the ideas and issues within my comic, I think there is a small autobiographical element in there. So perhaps it's a way to remember my childhood and meditate on some of the things that happened. Life can be mysterious and full of uncertainties when you're a kid.

LM-page-3-lwSo far my ambition is to complete the first little story- and then who knows? Perhaps I'll write a story about completely different characters, and come back to the two kids later. That's the beauty of this concept- I already have the raw source material, I just need to choose what to use and when to use it.

In terms of distribution of my comic…. well I have a market stall in a really cool little craft market in Brick Lane – East London – where I already sell my regular art work. I've already started making promoting the comic at comic cons which lets me meet other people making comics which is lots of fun.

Making web comic is of course a possibility…. long as I can produce enough work to ensure regular page releases.

Whatever happens, I'm determined to keep a momentum and continue with this creative process. Because… it's a glorious one!
