A Place In Space To Move Its Place In Space
Bleeding Cool recently ran a story about Croydon's A Place In Space almost being burnt down as part of the English riots a month back.
Well that shop is staying put – thriving, even.
But the shop it bought in London, Comicana, now also renamed A Place In Space, is upping sticks from the arse end of Shaftesbury Avenue, to mid Fitzrovia, and a larger location.
It seems strange that a shop that stood in one place for twenty years, while London changed around it, should move across Tottenham Court Road the minute new owners come on board. But I understand that it's down to the landlord of the block suddenly cancelling everyone's leases, for redevelopment.
With Gosh Comics moving to the middle of Soho, this had pushed A Place In Space away from the comic book centre of gravity in London, and this move will pull them further away. However it will put a comic book shop closer to Oxford Circus tube, which may be more convenient for some.
It will also be on the doorstep of BBC Broadcasting House, so we might expect Radio 4 to become a little more comic book conscious as a result.
It's also close to the Green Man pub, which serves the finest cider in the city. Cellar Special is a must.
And rather than the cramped quarters that A Place In Space had done its best to brighten up from the longbox covered hovel it used to be, this will give the shop room to breathe.
For the meantime, A Place In Space is fulfilling London customers' standing orders from its Croydon branch with free postage, but hopes to open its new London store at 83 Mortimer Street, imminently.
