See it's not just Doctor Who. Starting on Monday on BBC1, a new adaptation of John Wyndham's Day of The Triffids. The original fifties novel saw the world blinded by a meteor shower, only to be preyed upon by killer plants the Triffids, with their moving roots and deadly stings. Very much a precursor to many zombie plots, Little Shop Of Horrors, Survivors and the like. One of the film adaptations even gets a mention in the Rocky Horror Show opening number. And even Marvel Comics published an adpattaion of the novel, back in the day when they did that sort of thing. The BBC TV adaptation I remember from my childhood was nasty enough that it sent me scurrying to the book which was even nastier. And opened my mind to a world of John Wyndham, he still remains one of my favourite authors. Chocky was never quite that good though.
The adaptation stars Dougray Scott, with Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, Eddie Izzard and Jason Priestley.
Go on have a gander. On BBC1, Monday, 9pm. And on various torrent sites a couple of hours later…
