Cully Hamner In Danger Of Being Forgotten In Red Adaptation

The movie Red, based on the Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner comic book mini-series of the same name for DC/Wildstorm started shooting yesterday. With an all-star aging cast of the likes of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Denzel Washington, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfus and Ernest Borgnine. All fine and dandy. But in the press release sent out around the place, it reads;

January 12, 2010 — Toronto, Canada – Principal photography has begun in Toronto on Summit Entertainment's spy-thriller "Red," based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis.

Which has dutifully been repeated by media outlets everywhere. Warren Ellis' name, big and bold, justifiably, but not a mention of Cully Hamner.

This reminds me of the Hugo Award nomination for Neil Gaiman for Sandman #18 – A Midsummer's Night Dream, that missed off Charles Vess until Gaiman kicked up a fuss.

Bizarrely, Alan Moore's decision to take his name off movies based on his work, meant that V For Vendetta and Watchmen had the opposite problem, crediting only the artists David Lloyd and Dave Gibbons.

But this is one of those things that if not stopped at the outset, spreads as clipping upon clipping forget that there was an artist involved with the creation of the original graphic novel. And indeed, seems to have contributed to the look and feel of the movie.

So chaps. Next press release, let's see Cully's name alongside Warren's. And film websites, feel free to repeat and propagate this call…
