Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora's Once & Future #1 Sells Out Again Before First Printing Published, Third Printing to Come?
Much to the surprise of no one, Boom Studios Once & Future #1 from Dr. Kieron Gillen and Maybe-A-Doctor-But-We-Haven't-
We saw some of the speculator sites pushing the Once & Future #1 second printing as a hot new printing, treating it like a variant cover for a series with no orderable variant covers and it had all the signs of a quick sell out.
Well, the new printing FOC'd just this Monday, August 5th and I'm told it has sold out at Diamond, with even more orders than Boom expected after a record-breaking first print the likes of which we haven't seen on a single cover since Robert Kirkman's Oblivion Song in 2018.
I expect Boom Studios to announce they're fast-tracking a third printing before the first issue ships with a new cover. That put the series in Marvel Event territory, such as Absolute Carnage going to a third printing before the first printing was published. And Marvel didn't even sell out of the first printing before they did that.
Should we expect a third printing announcement for Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans' Die #6 from Image Comics this week as well as some kind of retaliation, with the two companies waging a war of words for the affections of retailers, readers and Kieron Gillen himself?
It certainly seems like Boom Studios and Image Comics are going to continue this war of one-upmanship as long as they're both publishing Kieron Gillen-penned hit series that outperform nearly every other creator-owned series on the planet – which is good news for those of us who enjoy new comics from everyone's second favourite Doctor.
Once & Future #1 first printing is on-sale in comic shops August 14th.
And Once & Future #1 second printing is on-sale in comic shops August 28th, the same day as the Die #6 second printing which isn't a coincidence on the part of Boom Studios…
Let's hope things stay civil between Boom and Image, shall we?
