Marvel Explains All Of Those Planet Hulk Rumors

For as long as the MCU has been around, there have been rumors about future movies. We've seen them all, but some of the most persistent that revolved around the Hulk. He was arguably one of Marvel's more "well-known" properties pre-2008 because of the classic TV show and the Ang Lee movie. Rumors of a World War Hulk or Planet Hulk movie have been going around since 2013. When Screen Rant paid a visit to the Thor: Ragnarok set, producer Brad Winderbaum finally cleared up all those rumors:

"I mean, it was a very early idea. In the earliest development of Thor, we were looking at 'Planet Hulk' as inspiration, maybe not even to integrate the Hulk into the franchise but the idea of a planet where there's gladiatorial games as being a Thor predicament. It really was a cool idea to us.

Somewhere in the early conversations, when it looked like it was going that way, it was a no brainer. It actually started off as like, '…could we have Hulk in there too?' And then as soon as that spark ignited, it ignited kind of an idea machine. And suddenly [Hulk] was married to the plot."

It makes sense that Planet Hulk or World War Hulk would be taken as inspiration rather than full adaptations. Fully committing to those as films would require nothing but CGI characters and would be a waste of Mark Ruffalo's considerable talent. Those are the type of stories that work best in animation. While it would be nice to see World War Hulk or Planet Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now is not the right time. It's cool that they looked to those stories for inspiration for Thor, though.

Summary: Imprisoned, the mighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.

Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi, stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Idris Elba, and Mark Ruffalo. It will be released on November 3rd.
