Motherlands #1 Suceeds to the Letter
Motherlands is a new comic book launching today from DC/Vertigo written by Si Spurrier, drawn by Rachael Stott and coloured by Felipe Sobreiro. And while I could talk about all their skills creating a riotous book that should appeal to those who like comics anywhere from Preacher to Transmet to Saga, with a foul-mouthed sci-fi romp, I also want to congratulate the letterer Simon Bowland.
Computers have changed the artform of lettering incredibly in the last decade or so, increasing the tools available but also standardising the look. The invention that the likes of Dave Sim brought to the form have been all but abandoned save for the likes of people who hand letter their work, like Paul Grist or Carla Speed McNeill.
And while the likes of Richard Starkings and Todd Klein have brought innovation and artistry to the form, it has become a less-valued aspect of the form.
So it was nice in Motherland #1 to see the following kind of invention. As character teleport from place to place, jumping from one reality to other, using portals that cut them off mid-speech…
…literally. There is no confusion over what is being said, just an opportunity to use the form to convey a different experience, and the kind of trick comic books can do so much better than other media. If they would but try. It's a shame that the upcoming teleporting comic Sideways from DC Comics didn't try and do likewise…
Oh and Spurrier and Stott are signing Motherlands at Forbidden Planet in London tomorrow…
MOTHERLANDS #1 (OF 6)
(W) Simon Spurrier (A) Rachael Stott (CA) Eric Canete
In a crazed future where unhinged technologies and interconnected parallel Earths have given rise to a spectacular class of super-criminal, the most beloved celebrities aren't actors or rock stars, but the bounty hunters who traverse an exotic multiverse in search of impossible prey! But when the spotlight-shunning, strait-laced tracer known as Tab finds herself in an ultra-violent race for her greatest prize yet, she's forced to work with her greatest enemy, the only person capable of IDing him: her own elderly, overbearing and hypercritical mother, who was once the most fabulous and celebrated bounty hunter of them all.
A sci-fi action comedy blacker than dragon s***, MOTHERLANDS is the dimension-hopping, criminal-blasting story of two extraordinary women written by Si Spurrier (SUICIDE SQUAD, The Spire) with art by Rachael Stott (Star Trek/Planet of the Apes, Sex Criminals).
