Preview: Human Target Pilot Script

The Human Target is a television series based on the DC Comic series, in which Christopher Chance impersonates people being targeted, or under threat. The pilot script for the now-picked-up TV series replicates that exactly, apart from the whole impersonation thing.

Shame, there could have been scope for all sorts of cameo "lead roles", with all sorts of actors playing Christopher Chance, episode by episode, a kind of anti-Dollhouse but they already tried that back in the 1990 TV version. They probably want a more traditional recurring lead actor approach.

In this show, Christopher Chance gets as close as they can to the client, embedding himself in their life, watching out for any and all threats.

As the script shows, that embedding can approach almost superhuman levels on the way he perceives his environment, with a visual/audio trick that should become a synonymous with the show as the cross-section autopsy like scenes in CSI, shifting perspective from object to object in the room.

And what we get, in the pilot at least, is reminisceint of those eighties disaster movies, a bunch of odd characters, some quite objectionable, as their luxury voyage is transformed into an impending disaster, with the perspective of the oncoming storm, reminiscent of the likes of 24. This is a good thing. It's surprising it's taken so long to put this two approaches together so well.

The psychological damage of Peter Milligan's run on the comic book character of late is also referenced here, although he seems slightly less misanthropic, more on a suicide run. It's not quite as dark, but its streets ahead of the likes of Fringe, House and Lie To Me in terms of damaged lead characters. This is also good thing.

I haven't seen the pilot (although BleedingCool's Adi Tantiamedh has – watch out for his review later this week) but on the script alone, I can see why there was so much attention.

Looks like it may well become a target in and of itself.
