Rob Liefeld added some extra information on TwitterX, saying "Hey anyone looking to purchase this, I illustrated this in the middle of a sketchbook for Tim Sale's girlfriend back in 1999. It is across two pages in a hard bound book." Well, I mean, it was…
No idea what Tim Sale's estate or Tim Sale's then-girlfriend will have to say about this. After all, it was twenty-five years ago, thereabouts. I was reminded a little of the Banksy piece of art on a STOP sign in Peckham, London that was removed with bolt cutters by an enterprising individual only a couple of hours after the provenance was confirmed. I have all manner of sketches in sketchbooks gathered over the years, and while I may have considered selling the book as a whole, in tough times, cutting them up with a scalpel never crossed my mind. Each sketchbook recordes comic book creators at a specific time, a specific place, all grouped together, reflecting a moment captured in pen and ink, comic book creators all together.
Still that is a cool looking ape. The listing of this Rob Liefeld two-piece is currently at $360 from 25 bids and I reckon it will go to four figures pretty quickly. Ho ho ho.
