The Adventures Of Super Penguin
The Adventures Of Super Penguin is a project that is very close to my heart. And it's a comic book!
I grew up on comics. Now, I'm sharing my love of comic books with my son, Grey. And he's sharing them back.
In fact, Super Penguin was my son's own creation. He first came to life when Grey was about five-years old. With a red cape tied around his neck, Grey's favorite stuffed penguin, Agate, became a superhero. The best superhero.
Super Penguin quickly took on a life story of his own. He was Agate's alter ego; of course Agate was Grey's alter ego, too.
Grey, who is now ten, and I have spent hours and hours over the last five years dreaming up fun stories for Super Penguin and his crew.
In the comic the characters are oblivious to the fact that they have mystically come to life and that their reality is coming straight from Grey's imagination. To them the adventure is real.
And in the story, Grey is also unaware that his toys come to life when he's not around to play out the scenarios he conjured up.
The Adventures of Super Penguin is set in Minneapolis, a city in need of a hero. Agate puts on his cape, transforms into Super Penguin and flies around the city surprising citizens and doing what he can to help them.
Now with Grey's help, I'm bringing Super Penguin to life. At least that's the plan.
We are using Kickstarter to sell the first 6-issue story, which we hope to then assemble into a graphic novel. We are putting finishing touches on Issue # 1 and if it sells we'll be able to publish.
For me, the fun of drawing Super Penguin goes beyond the sheer joy of making art. The extra fun thing for me is that I get to tell the story of my son, our play times and his imagination, all while creating a cool kids' comic that he, and hopefully many other kids and comic fans will love. And Grey gets what every kid wants, right? – to make his playtimes real – for real.
